Common Tasks

Starting a Folder Comparison

Step 1:

You can either:

  • Enter the path of the two root folders (or of a valid archive or folderprint file) directly into the edit boxes in the Select Folders pane, or
  • open the Select Folders Dialog by clicking on the Select Folders button Select Folders, which allows you to pick a folder from the directory tree as well as set some other options. If you want to use an archive file or folderprint in a comparison then select the relevant option (towards the top of the dialog), and select the desired file from the file list box.

Step 2:

If you don't want to use the default compare settings, go to the Project Settings -> Compare page, to change the settings to suit your needs. You can also set the various filters in the Project Settings -> Filters page.

Step 4:

You may want to change the Different file highlight settings in the General Options -> Display page.

Copying Files

Step 1:

After comparing the two folders select the files you want to copy (or check the files you want to copy if using checkboxes) in the file display pane.

Step 2:

Bring up the Copy dialog by clicking on the Copy button (in the Main Controls bar), or by pressing Ctrl-C.

Step 3:

  • The Copy dialog shows the source and destination root of files to copy.
  • If Copying files in the Overview tab, then it is implied that Folder 1 Only files will be copied to Folder 2, and that Folder 2 Only files will be copied to Folder 1. Same and Different files will be copied according to their source settings.
  • The "use other location" option, allows you to copy the selected files to another location (folder or archive file).
  • The "Files to copy" option group allows you to select whether to copy only selected, checked or all files.
  • After checking that the settings are correct, click the Copy button.

Deleting Files

Step 1:

After comparing the two folders select the files you want to delete (or check the files you want to delete if using checkboxes) in the file display pane.

Step 2:

Bring up the Delete dialog by clicking on the Delete button (in the Main Controls bar), or by pressing Ctrl-D.

Step 3:

  • If deleting from the Overview, Same or Different tabs you must select from which folder(s) you want to delete the selected files from.
  • If the "use recycle bin if possible" option is checked, files will be sent to the recycle bin, otherwise they will be deleted permanently.
  • The "Files to delete" option group allows you to select whether to delete only selected, checked or all files.
  • After checking that the settings are correct, click the Delete button.

Synchronizing and Backup

Step 1:

After comparing the two root folders, open the Synchronize, Backup and Mirror Dialog, by clicking on the Sync button.

Step 2:

  • From the "Sync type" box, select the desired sync type operation (see Folder Synchronization and Backup for an explanation). The display shows exactly what file copy and delete operations will be performed.
  • Additionally the Different options box, changes according to the selected sync type option. This setting can however, be manually overridden to set how to copy Different files. Especially if you want to copy according to the different source settings (as shown in the file display), you must select the "Copy according to source settings" option.
  • Choosing any setting other than the "Copy according to source settings" option, will ignore the different source settings.
  • You can select the "Include Same" option if you want to include Same files in the chosen operation.
  • If you want to copy the files to another directory (or archive file), check the "Copy to other" option, and fill in the desired destination.

Step 3:

After checking that the settings are correct, click on the "Start" button.
