Filter Lists

The Filters to Apply tab of the main TextPipe window controls the operations that are performed on each file.

Filter Lists

All Available Filters is a categorized view of all TextPipe's filters. It also contains links to wizards, useful documentation and other options. To add one of these filters, either double click it, or drag and drop it to the right hand My Filters List.

My Filter List is a list of the filters that will be applied to your text; each is briefly described. For more detail, click the node, and the settings will be shown on the far right. The Num column shows the order that filters will be applied in. You can control the order by dragging and dropping nodes, or by using the Up/Down buttons at the base of the tree.

Double clicking on a filter toggles it between enabled and disabled state. A filter that has been disabled does not take part in filtering operations, and its icon is crossed out.

Adding filters
To add a new filter to the list:

  • Place the cursor ABOVE the position where you would like the new filter. The new filter will be added below the cursor
  • Double-click or drag and drop the filter from the All Available Filters view
  • The new filter will be added below the cursor
  • Edit the filter's properties on the right hand side of the window

Remove
To remove a filter, select it and press [Delete] or click [Remove].

Remove All
To remove all filters, click [Remove All], which will then ask for confirmation.

Drag and Drop
Filters can be dragged and dropped within the filter list to change their position. Filters cannot be dragged to a position prior to the Input Filter or after the Output Filter. During drag and drop, moving the mouse above or below the list causes the list to scroll. The further the mouse is away from the list, the faster it will scroll.

To create a sub filter, drag a filter onto the text of another filter node (the mouse cursor will display a barred circle if the filter does not accept sub filters). An alternative to positioning the mouse in the right hand side of the tree view is to hold down the [Shift] key while you drag. You can also hold down the [Alt] key when you add a new filter and it will be added as a sub filter of the current filter (if allowed).

Watch the status bar for information of whether TextPipe is going to simply swap filter positions or if it will create a sub filter.

Right-click menu
The tree view has a context menu which can be used to Enable or Disable a filter, delete it, Cut, Copy or Paste a filter or group of filters, and perform partial trial runs.

Partial Trial Runs
You can perform a Trial Run using the text in the Trial Run area. This is initiated using the [Trial Run] button. You can also perform a partial trial run by right clicking on a filter, and choosing a trial run of the selected filter or all filters up to that point. This is a very handy way of debugging filters.

Keyboard commands

  • Alt+Up Moves the selected filter up one position
  • Alt+Down Moves the selected filter down one position
  • Alt+(add a new filter) If allowed, TextPipe adds the new filter as a sub filter of the currently selected filter.
  • Shift+(add a new filter) TextPipe adds the new filter at the parent level of the current filter.
  • Shift+(drag a filter) Tries to add the dragged filter as a sub filter regardless of whether the mouse is in the right hand half of the tree view or not.

Command Line
A filter list file can be opened on the command line by using the /F=<filename> option.
